Attendance
Timeliness and preparedness are vital to ensuring student academic success. Our attendance procedures are intended to involve parents, teach students responsibility, and provide for optimum instruction and academic accountability.
Absences and Tardies
Students are considered absent if they arrive 20 minutes or more late to a class period.
Students arriving within the first 20 minutes of a class period are marked tardy.
Reporting Absences
All absences must be reported within 24 hours, regardless of the reason.
Absences reported after 24 hours will be documented in the student’s attendance record but cannot be excused per district policy.
Absences may be reported by a parent or legal guardian through ParentVUE (PVUE) Parents - Higley Unified School District 60 or by calling the Attendance Office at (480) 279-8000, select Option #2, then Option #1.
If an emergency contact signs a student out, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to call and excuse the absence within 24 hours or by the next business day.
An automated reminder call is sent daily at 5:00 PM.
Doctor, Dentist, and Court Notes
A timely, verified note from a doctor’s office, dentist/orthodontist, or court system will excuse an absence in place of parent contact.
If a student arrives at school with a doctor’s note, the absence will be excused, and parent contact is not required.
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
Absences are classified as excused or unexcused. Per the State of Arizona, only the following reasons may be excused:
Bereavement/Funeral (BRE)
Chronic Illness (CHR) – requires approval from the District Health Office
Doctor Note (DRN) – with verified documentation
Doctor’s Appointment (DR) – includes orthodontist appointments
Family Emergency (FER)
Illness (ILL)
Religious Holiday (REL)
Vacation/Out of Town (VAC)
The following are examples of unexcused absence reasons:
Appointment (too generic)
Late
Traffic
Other
Targeted Attendance
6 or fewer days per year - excused or unexcused - leads to positive outcomes & educational benefits.
Warning Attendance
7-9 days per year - excused or unexcused - can place the student several days behind classmates’ learning opportunities.
Chronic Absenteeism
10 or more days per year - excused or unexcused - leads to lost learning opportunities.
Modified Schedule Days
On modified schedule days, such as early release, testing, or assembly days, EVIT students are not automatically excused from their Williams Field High School classes. Unless a parent or legal guardian excuses the absence, students are expected to attend their scheduled classes on our campus.
Please note that EVIT does not share attendance information with our school. Students enrolled in EVIT still have classes on our campus that they are required to attend unless properly excused by a parent or guardian.
For the safety and protection of our students, students will not be called out of class to wait in the office for pickup. Please plan accordingly and allow sufficient time to complete the sign-out process.
Auto Dialer Information
Calls placed on the auto dialer before 1:00 PM will be updated by the end of the business day.
Calls placed after 1:00 PM will be updated on the next business day.
Attendance
480.279.8000 Option 2
Please check ParentVue on a daily basis to ensure all absences are updated. If a student or parent feels the student was marked absent incorrectly, please have the student talk to their teacher about the absence. The teacher will report any necessary changes or corrections to the Attendance Office.
Tardies, Late Arrivals & Leaving Early
Students who arrive late at any time during the school day must sign in at the Front Office.
Students leaving campus during the school day must be signed out at the Front Office by a parent or legal guardian.
We encourage parents and guardians to help students arrive at school on time. Please plan accordingly for traffic and other delays. Late arrivals disrupt instruction and are disrespectful to classmates and teachers.
Tardy
We encourage parents to assist students with arriving to school on time. Please be aware of traffic issues and plan accordingly. Students who come to class late cause a classroom disruption and disrespect to classmates and teachers.
Important Notes:
Tardies may be reported by a parent or legal guardian through ParentVUE (PVUE) Parents - Higley Unified School District 60 or by calling the Attendance Office at (480) 279-8000, select Option #2, then Option #1.
Parents do not need to sign in students for tardies. The only excused tardy is ones approved per the State of Arizona. (see beside)
Students who arrive more than 20 minutes late to class will be marked absent for that class period.
TARDY TO SCHOOL: In order for a student to be excused from class when he/she is late for school, the student must check in at the attendance desk to be signed in. To excuse being tardy, the attendance office must receive a phone call or email within a 24-hour period from a parent/guardian using a verified phone number or email on the student's file. A note from the doctor’s office, dentist's office, or court system will also excuse a student in lieu of a parent calling.
Be advised: 3 and 6 "Unexcused tardies" will result in before or after school detention.
Be advised: 9 “Unexcused tardies” will result in Saturday School.
Be advised: Excessive "Excused tardies" will result in a meeting between parents and administration which may result in Saturday school. (8:00 a.m. – 11:00 am).
Be advised: A parent/guardian may not call in to excuse a tardy that occurs when a student is traveling from class to class.
